Extracting Water vs. Drying Out: Why Standing Water Removal Is Only Step One

Getting the puddles off the floor makes a flooded room look much better, but moisture can still remain inside drywall, flooring, insulation, and framing. Tidal Wave Response provides water damage restoration services that focus on the visible water as well as the moisture left behind after extraction. Thorough drying reduces the risk of warped materials, lingering odors, and mold growth after a leak or flood. Continue reading to find out why water removal is only the beginning and what happens during the drying process.

Standing Water Should Be Removed as Quickly as Possible

When a pipe breaks, an appliance leaks, or floodwater enters a building, the first priority is getting standing water out of the affected area. Water resting on floors continues to spread through seams, gaps, porous surfaces, and openings around walls. Carpet padding absorbs it. Wood flooring draws moisture into joints and edges. Drywall can pull water upward from the floor through capillary action.

Towels, mops, and household wet vacuums only get you so far when there’s a lot of water on the floor. Restoration crews use pumps or commercial extractors to remove larger amounts from carpet, hard flooring, and other surfaces. The sooner the water comes out, the less time it has to keep soaking into nearby materials.

Fast extraction also makes the next stage more efficient. Drying equipment has to remove water that has entered materials or evaporated into the indoor air. Leaving gallons of standing water in place adds unnecessary moisture to that workload.

Moisture Stays Trapped Inside Building Materials

Water has plenty of places to hide once it gets into a building. Drywall has a paper-covered gypsum core, wood has tiny pores and fibers, and carpet padding can hold a lot of water. Insulation might also stay damp inside a wall or ceiling, even after the outside looks dry.

Problems can keep developing even after the standing water is gone. Wood may start to swell or cup, and drywall can become soft or begin to break apart. Water will also loosen flooring adhesives, while damp materials give mold and other microbial growth a chance to take hold.

A complete water damage restoration job in Kennesaw has to account for that hidden moisture. Before painting, repairs, or replacement work begins, the affected materials need time to dry to appropriate moisture levels.

Hi. I don’t know where to start. John and Tidal wave his company were and still are a blessing from my Lord. One morning in January of this year I went down stairs and stepped in a puddle of water it was flooded. I also passed out. This was the second one in less than a year. I stood there for a minute and just cried. All I could think of was my insurance company may not take care of it a second time even if it was for a different leak. The last claim they paid out $23,000 for…

I have worked in sales and also have experience in launching my own business. It is rare that you find a company that genuinely has your best interest in mind. Not only was John helpful outside of his business’ expertise, but he sent Chris to do a *free* evaluation of our water damage. John and Chris were both genuine and personable. They cared about what our situation was and they weren’t looking to get any sort of “fee” for their time. These are the kind of people you trust to handle big, catastrophic water damage to. I have previously had…

While others might categorize John as a fast talker, but on the other hand. I saw a man that's passionate about his business and willing to help others elevate their present situation. In early December 2022, our laundry room floor and wall got water damaged due to leakage from the hotline pipe, and other rooms got impacted due to water spreading. So, I reached out to John and he assured me they'll do everything within their power to get our house done before Christmas day. Boy was he right! John and the tidalwave response team were professional, helpful and got…

We did not plan to renovate our terrace level but when the hot water heater leaked and flooded the entire area, Tidal Wave was recommended to us by the plumber who installed the new hot water heater. John, the owner was at our house the same evening and mitigation started early the next morning. The crew professionally removed wet drywall, flooring, and baseboard. Fans and dehumidifiers ran for several days and then the fun began. With Colin's help we were able to choose updated flooring, repaint a color of our choice, and new trim was installed. Everything was completed professionally.…

Had a shaky start with this particular project but I must say the owner took charge and corrected all the remaining issues. I will say that this particular job was the absolute worst I have taken on in 45 yrs. My hat is off to Mike and his crew and Allan was superb in making sure everything was done correctly. Thank you for your follow-up on this project guys. And Allan thank you especially for your thoroughness in making sure it was completed correctly.

Unfortunately, my water heater was old, cracked, and leaking water onto the supported area in my garage. I needed to replace the water heater with a new one, but the plumber told me that in order to meet the city code, I would have to handle the water damage first. I called out tidal wave (who I’ve worked with before), and they came out the very next day to cut out the affected area and treat for mold. This is my second issue with water in my house and tidal wave has taken care of both issues. They are fast,…

Drying Equipment Targets Areas You Cannot See

Once standing water has been extracted, the focus shifts to moving moisture out of the structure. Restoration crews commonly use air movers and dehumidifiers for different parts of this job.

Air movers direct air across wet materials so moisture can evaporate from drywall, framing, carpet, subflooring, and other surfaces. Dehumidifiers handle the moisture that enters the air. If that water vapor stays trapped in the room, the air becomes more humid and evaporation slows down.

Where the equipment goes makes a difference. Moisture rarely spreads evenly across a room, and a wet wall cavity doesn't dry the same way as damp hardwood flooring. Air needs to reach the areas where water is still trapped instead of simply blowing through the open part of the room.

Sometimes that means opening up areas that normal airflow can't reach. Crews may remove baseboards to expose damp drywall near the floor. Wet carpet may need to be lifted so the pad and subfloor underneath can be checked. Materials that are heavily saturated may need to come out if drying them in place isn't practical.

Moisture Readings Track Progress During the Job

A room can look dry before the materials inside it have finished drying. Moisture sometimes lingers beneath flooring or inside walls where you can’t see it. Restoration crews use moisture-detection equipment to check those areas and see how much drying still needs to happen.

Crews don’t use the same tool for every surface. Wood and drywall are usually checked with moisture meters, and those meters work in different ways. Some have tiny pins that touch the material from the inside. Others read beneath the surface without leaving holes. A thermal camera can also help narrow down where to inspect next, although it shows temperature differences rather than moisture.

Measurements give technicians a way to compare affected materials with dry areas of the building. They can also reveal if the drying setup is producing progress. If moisture levels aren't dropping as expected, equipment placement or access to the wet material may need to change.

Flooring and Drywall Hold Water Differently

Water doesn't affect every surface in the same way. The material involved, how long it was exposed, and where the water traveled all influence the drying approach.

Drywall soaks up water quickly, and the bottom edge is especially vulnerable when water reaches the floor. The wet area inside the wall can extend higher than the line you see from the room. If there’s insulation behind the drywall, that material may stay damp even longer because ordinary airflow can’t easily reach inside the wall cavity.

Flooring has its own problems. Water can pass through carpet and collect in the pad or subfloor below. Laminate may swell along the seams once moisture reaches its fiberboard core. Hardwood can absorb water from either side of the boards, which may cause cupping, swelling, or other changes in shape.

Tile is more water-resistant, but the tile surface isn't the only layer that matters. Water can still get through damaged grout, along edges and transitions, or through nearby walls before reaching the subfloor underneath.

Are Your Walls and Floors Fully Dry?

Once standing water disappears, it becomes easier to underestimate the remaining damage. Before replacing flooring, closing walls, painting stains, or moving furniture back into the room, the underlying materials need to be evaluated for remaining moisture. Tidal Wave Response helps property owners take care of both visible water and the drying work that follows. If a leak, flood, or plumbing problem has left water inside your property, contact our team to discuss the next steps.
