Removing the water you can see doesn’t mean the materials underneath are dry. Moisture can remain inside drywall, insulation, flooring, subfloors, and wall cavities after standing water has been extracted. At Tidal Wave Response, our water damage restoration process focuses on both visible water and moisture that may have spread into surrounding materials. Keep reading to learn why water removal is only the first stage of drying a property and what has to happen before affected areas can truly be considered dry.
When water is covering part of a floor, getting rid of it is the obvious first priority. A broken supply line, overflowing appliance, or burst pipe can leave gallons of water sitting where it doesn't belong, and every extra minute gives that water more opportunity to soak into the house.
Extraction makes a major difference at this stage. It removes the bulk of the water quickly and gets the property out of the emergency phase. Once the puddles are gone, though, the room isn't automatically dry.
Some of the water has already moved into the materials around it. The bottom edge of drywall may have absorbed moisture. Carpet padding can still be wet even after the carpet surface has been extracted, and water can slip between flooring planks or reach the subfloor through seams. Extraction handles the water sitting on the surface, while drying deals with what’s already absorbed.
A spill on tile behaves very differently from a spill on drywall or wood. Some building materials resist water fairly well. Others absorb it. Drywall is especially vulnerable because of the gypsum core and paper facing. If water reaches the bottom of a wall, it can enter through edges and openings even when the painted surface doesn't look wet. Insulation behind the drywall also holds moisture out of view.
Flooring assemblies make the situation harder to judge. A homeowner may walk across a floor a few hours after extraction and find that the top surface seems dry. Underneath, moisture may still be trapped between the flooring and the underlayment or within the subfloor. Whether those materials can be dried or need to be removed depends on the circumstances. The type of water involved, the amount of saturation, the material, and its condition during drying all influence the decision.
Hi. I don’t know where to start. John and Tidal wave his company were and still are a blessing from my Lord. One morning in January of this year I went down stairs and stepped in a puddle of water it was flooded. I also passed out. This was the second one in less than a year. I stood there for a minute and just cried. All I could think of was my insurance company may not take care of it a second time even if it was for a different leak. The last claim they paid out $23,000 for…

Restored the furniture without incident nor damage. 5) Dehumidified and removed the damaged carpet and hardwoods. 6) Cleaned the concrete surface and installed the new hardwoods.…
I have worked in sales and also have experience in launching my own business. It is rare that you find a company that genuinely has your best interest in mind. Not only was John helpful outside of his business’ expertise, but he sent Chris to do a *free* evaluation of our water damage. John and Chris were both genuine and personable. They cared about what our situation was and they weren’t looking to get any sort of “fee” for their time. These are the kind of people you trust to handle big, catastrophic water damage to. I have previously had…
While others might categorize John as a fast talker, but on the other hand. I saw a man that's passionate about his business and willing to help others elevate their present situation. In early December 2022, our laundry room floor and wall got water damaged due to leakage from the hotline pipe, and other rooms got impacted due to water spreading. So, I reached out to John and he assured me they'll do everything within their power to get our house done before Christmas day. Boy was he right! John and the tidalwave response team were professional, helpful and got…
We did not plan to renovate our terrace level but when the hot water heater leaked and flooded the entire area, Tidal Wave was recommended to us by the plumber who installed the new hot water heater. John, the owner was at our house the same evening and mitigation started early the next morning. The crew professionally removed wet drywall, flooring, and baseboard. Fans and dehumidifiers ran for several days and then the fun began. With Colin's help we were able to choose updated flooring, repaint a color of our choice, and new trim was installed. Everything was completed professionally.…
Wow incredible company! I had a water damage that destroyed my entire main level. John and his team are very quick and efficient. When I was looking on google, tidal wave response was the only water restoration company with a 5 star review. Highly recommended using tidal wave response!!
I had a flood in my downstairs living room. It was devastating. John with Tidal wave was very professional. He had his team show up immediately to get the job done. Great work Tidal Wave. I'm definitely going to refer you to others.
Thank Goodness !!! Johnny on the spot! We had a pipe ruptured in the ceiling and we were looking for a 5 Star Rated Water Restoration company . Johnny came out with a Thermal Camera and found the pipe spraying behind the wall. I wish I would have called him sooner . My wood floors were so damaged by the water, they all will need to be replaced. We highly recommended Johnny with Tidal Wave. Very knowledgeable and even helped us start a claim with our insurance ..
Had a shaky start with this particular project but I must say the owner took charge and corrected all the remaining issues. I will say that this particular job was the absolute worst I have taken on in 45 yrs. My hat is off to Mike and his crew and Allan was superb in making sure everything was done correctly. Thank you for your follow-up on this project guys. And Allan thank you especially for your thoroughness in making sure it was completed correctly.
Unfortunately, my water heater was old, cracked, and leaking water onto the supported area in my garage. I needed to replace the water heater with a new one, but the plumber told me that in order to meet the city code, I would have to handle the water damage first. I called out tidal wave (who I’ve worked with before), and they came out the very next day to cut out the affected area and treat for mold. This is my second issue with water in my house and tidal wave has taken care of both issues. They are fast,…
Water doesn't necessarily stay where the leak happened. Once it reaches the structure, it can follow whatever path the building gives it. Common pathways include:
For homeowners, this can make the original wet area misleading. The visible puddle shows where some of the water went, but it doesn't show the full extent of the damage.
Once the standing water is gone, appearance becomes a poor measuring tool. Drywall might look fine from across the room, and the flooring no longer looks wet. Unfortunately, none of those observations confirm what’s happening inside the material.
Moisture detection equipment helps fill in the gap. Readings show if a material still contains more moisture than comparable dry materials in the property. They also help identify where the wet area ends, which isn't always obvious from stains or surface conditions.
After water removal, the next challenge is getting absorbed moisture out of the building materials. For that to happen, moisture inside drywall, wood, flooring, and other materials has to move toward the surface and evaporate into the surrounding air. Air movers help support this process by keeping dry air moving across surfaces.
Once moisture enters the air as vapor, it needs to be removed from the space. That is where dehumidification comes in. Dehumidifiers pull water from the air and help keep indoor humidity low enough for evaporation to continue.
Drying a property depends on where the moisture ended up. Wet drywall in an open room won’t behave the same as water trapped under flooring or inside a wall. Room size, airflow, humidity, the materials involved, and how much water they absorbed all affect how the drying process needs to be handled. Simply running fans in a room doesn't guarantee every wet material has dried. Drying has to reach the places where the water went.
One reason water damage restoration in Chamblee, GA can take different amounts of time from one property to another is that materials don't all dry in the same way. Wood naturally contains some moisture, for example. Drying wood doesn't mean trying to reduce it to zero. Its readings may be compared with dry wood in an unaffected part of the home or evaluated against an appropriate target for the conditions.
Drying depends a lot on what got wet. Carpet and drywall may respond fairly quickly once the room has good airflow, but insulation, concrete, and flooring built in layers can stay damp much longer. Areas covered by cabinets, flooring, or other materials also get less air, which slows things down.
A subfloor under finished flooring won’t dry the same way as exposed wood. The same goes for drywall behind a cabinet or insulation inside a closed wall. The room may feel dry while moisture is still sitting in one of those harder-to-reach places.
Because of those differences, drying shouldn't be judged by a fixed number of days. One section of a room may reach an acceptable moisture level before another. The condition of the affected materials gives a much better picture of when drying is complete.
Once the room starts looking normal again, it’s easy to assume the drying is finished. The standing water is gone, the surfaces look better, and the equipment has already been running for a while. Before repairs begin, the area still needs to be checked for moisture that’s sitting under the flooring, behind the walls, or inside other materials. Closing everything up too soon can leave the moisture trapped where you can’t see it.
New flooring installed over a damp subfloor traps moisture underneath, and fresh paint doesn't dry the inside of wet drywall. Closing an open wall before framing or insulation has dried can seal moisture inside an assembly where it becomes much harder to spot.
Verification gives the drying process a clear endpoint. Once the affected areas have reached an appropriate condition, repair and reconstruction work can move forward.
Getting rid of the standing water is only the first part of the cleanup. Water damage restoration should include checking these hidden areas before repairs begin.
